Learnership

What is a learnership?

A learnership is more like preparation into the workplace environment or a stepping stone into furthering your career. I will explain more in details.

Usually, one participates in a learnership programme if they only have matric as their highest qualification. A recruiting company will train you and at the same time pay you for the job you do. When you complete your learnership programme, say after 12 months period, the company must have what is called an exit plan for you. It’s either you can be absorbed by the company for further employment or you go and further your studies.

Furthering your studies

If for example, you were doing social auxiliary work as your learnership programme, by the end of your programme, the company training you may award you with a certificate of programme completion. The certificate, together with your matric certificate may add weight when you are to apply for enrollment for social work degree.

Absorption to further employment

One other exit plan for the recruiting or training company might be that, they might absorb you permanently. You may become a permanent member of their workforce or given a longer contract.

South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) is responsible for grading of training institutions and the learning programmes. For the learnership programme to be recognised, the training provider must be accredited for the training they are providing. The SETAS are responsible for accreditation of training providers.
